Become an Undocumented Youth Ally Trainer

Last week while I was in Sacramento meeting with Dr. Wesley Smith, Executive Director for the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA), our conversation evolved in an unexpected way.  We found that we both shared a very strong concern for undocumented youth in California and have made efforts to help our members service this population during these uncertain times.  I gave Dr. Smith a CASC Undocumented Ally campaign sticker and explained the certificated-level training program we are offering as a unique professional development opportunity during the preconference sessions on October 22, 2017 at the Riverside Convention Center. Dr. Smith expressed a strong interest in better understanding the advocacy and leadership roles of school counselors in this effort, and of course, I invited key leaders from ACSA to attend.

This preconference training provides California school counselors valuable information regarding the legal and institutional issues, along with practical ways to address our undocumented youth population. Due to the critical federal and ever-changing uncertainties of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), it is vital, more than even, that school counselors stay on the cutting-edge and be seen as the go-to person on their school campuses. The training team is from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. It is a five-hour training. At the conclusion of the training all participants will receive a certificate of completion.
in the wake of Trump's announcement to eliminate DACA, UC conferences officials indicated the ending of DACA will not change the college application or financial aid process for DACA students.  However, they do believe the work studies program will be eliminated.
