Gov. Newsom Names Three Members to California's State Board of Education & One of Them Holds a PPS Credential in School Counseling!

There are three new members to California's State Board of Education as appointed by Governor Newsom.

Cynthia Glover Woods, James McQuillen, and Haydee Rodriguez are now part of the 11-member State Board of Education, which is California's K-12 policy-making body for academic standards, curriculum, instructional materials, assessments, and accountability.

Cynthia Glover Woods is the chief academic officer at the Riverside County Office of Education, Haydee Rodriguez is a bilingual and bicultural high school teacher at Central Union High School in El Centro, and James McQuillen is the education director for the Yurok Tribe in Northern California. It is important to note that as indicated in last week's Press Release from the California Department of Education, James McQuillen holds a Pupil Personnel Services Credential (PPS) in school counseling. McQuillen's representation on the state board as a PPS credentialed school counselor is truly monumental as this is the first known appointment of an individual holding a PPS credential in school counseling to the California State Board of Education.

Representative of varying geographic locations across the golden state landscape, each of the three new members will utilize their specialized areas of expertise within the State Board of Education, thereby upholding the CA Department of Education's mission: California will provide a world-class education for all students, from early childhood to adulthood. The Department of Education serves our state by innovating and collaborating with educators, schools, parents, and community partners. Together, as a team, we prepare students to live, work, and thrive in a multicultural, multilingual, and highly connected world.
